New storage capacity at Speed terminal in Gdansk
The Port of Gdansk and Speed Sp. z o.o have recently completed the construction of two storage and maneuvering yards in the inner harbor. The yards have a total area of around 20,000 square meters and come with access roads, a connector to railway tracks, as well as necessary infrastructure such as electricity, water and sewage, fire protection, and telecommunications.
In addition, a grain storage facility has been constructed, and the acceptance procedure for it has begun. The hall tent has an area of approximately 4,000 square meters, measures 50×80 meters, and is around 10 meters high. It features built-in retaining walls and can store and handle over 23,000 tonnes of grain. The investment also includes an 8,000 square meter sealed tray yard with a rainwater treatment system, which allows the handling of cargos whose leachate can be problematic for the environment, such as scrap metal, sulfur, and phosphate. There is also a 4,500 square meter warehouse for neutral chemicals like fertilizers and caustic soda, and approximately 15,000 square meters of storage and maneuvering yards.
Speed company in Gdansk operates from two multipurpose terminals, one in the Port of Gdansk and the other in Gdynia. It deals mainly with the handling of bulk cargo and is located in the immediate vicinity of the Vistula (Wislane) Quay, between Handlowa Street and the railway siding complex.
The construction of these storage yards began in October 2022, serving the development of Poland’s energy security and the need to increase the Port of Gdansk’s coal handling capacity. According to Anna Drozd from Speed, the investment includes an 8,000 square meter sealed tray yard, a 4,500 square meter warehouse for neutral chemicals, and approximately 15,000 square meters of storage and maneuvering yards. Grain can be stored up to a height of 6 meters and middlings up to 8 meters.
